A Rare Vintage Arts & Crafts Donegal Rug in Aubergine and Green BB7686 10'4" × 10'6" $35,000

$35,000

A vintage hand-knotted wool Donegal rug, possibly by Alexander Morton. A vast dusty-aubergine field with a green border with floral elements. The corner design elements are reminiscent of some of the rugs made for the “New Irish Hand-Made Carpets” exhibition at Liberty’s Regent Street store in 1907. The rug is in excellent condition.

British artist Gavin Morton (1867–1954) is perhaps best known for his work as head of the design department for Morton & Co, a Scotland based textile company founded by his uncle Alexander Morton. Over time, Morton & Co aligned itself with the rising Arts and Crafts movement in Great Britain.
