A vintage Swedish flatwoven rug by Judith Johansson (1916-1993) with woven initials ‘JJ’ at a lower corner. The design is called “Riddarsporrar” (Larkspurs – Flowering larkspurs in early morning sun). Successive rows of geometric shapes in hues of blue, purple, green and brown on a gray background give a modern look to this timeless piece. Hand-woven from the highest quality materials in “rölakan” flatweave technique, this Swedish rug encompasses the love for tradition and the excellent craftsmanship of Scandinavian design.
Judith Johansson is recognized as one of the geniuses of 20th-century weaving, Johansson hailed from a rural part of Sweden steeped in textile traditions. She founded her own atelier by the time she turned 30, and is credited with resuscitating the handmade production of Scandinavian flat weave rugs. Her work is known for nature-inspired patterns and geometric abstractions.
