This vintage rug, made circa 1950, comes from the golden period for Chinese rug industry marked by the thriving business activity of Walter Nichols. The first half of the 20th century was a turning point for Chinese weavings. It was then Chinese rugs have transformed from utterly traditional to more contemporary by absorbing Western influences, Art Deco among others.
The vintage Chinese rug before your eyes is a paragon of the aesthetics of its time. It carries a detailed figurative design which represents an Oriental garden. Trees, plants, birds and mountains together create a graceful composition permeated with a distinct Far-Asian vibe. The main field is embraced by a series of borders, some of which are adorned with geometric and floral motifs. The composition is rendered in a warm and rich color palette featuring blue, gold, green and purple.
The rug was carefully hand-knotted of high-quality wool in accordance with traditional techniques. If maintained properly, it will serve its owners for generations without any signs of wear.
