The name is derived from the Japanese word “nuno” meaning cloth. The technique bonds loose fibers, usually wool, into a sheer fabric such as silk gauze, creating a lightweight felt. In case of this contemporary rug, the fibers completely cover the background fabric forming a uniform structure, divided into squares by raised seams. There is no figurative pattern or borders.
