Samarkand is one of the oldest inhabited cities in Central Asia whose Sogdian name translates as “Stone Fort” or Rock Town”. The name gives the idea of the town’s harsh surroundings, composed of arid steppes, vast deserts and rugged mountain ranges. Yet, this unwelcoming place became home to some of the most incredible safavieh samarkand rug designs which comprise influences from practically all neighboring countries.
This enchanting runner, although presently made, stays true the qualitative and diverse Samarkand weaving tradition. Its long, washed-out field is covered with an allover design of paired bold pomegranates, which in modern carpet language stand for fertility, entwined by vinery and foliage.
This magnificent composition is enclosed within a series of borders containing diamond motifs – an oriental symbol of protection against the Evil Eye – and far-eastern fret pattern. The design is executed in pale indigo against ivory background, an extremely popular color combination in India. The runner rug was masterfully hand-crafted of the finest wool in accordance with old and refined weaving techniques by a skilled artisan. Only such thorough making may ensure its uniqueness and ever-lasting quality. This Samarkand runner rug will perfectly fit into contemporary abodes to adorn staircases, halls or corridors and fill them with its recherché charm.
