I was in Paris, and I walked into this design show, and all of a sudden, I saw these four massive Tuareg rugs! Now, you have to remember that Tuareg rugs are referred to as mats because they’re usually very small. I’ve been in business for 42 years, and I’ve never seen even one big one. Here, there were four of them, about 11′ by 17′ and 10′ by 16′. I couldn’t believe it! Of course, I bought them!
Tuareg rugs are made essentially of reed palm and camel leather. They’re woven by ladies representing nomadic lifestyles within the Sahara Desert. Their natural dyes are made from vegetation; almost all have ancient symbols. Incredible four casual settings with high sun exposure, really not highly stylized at all, just comfortable and more like a floor covering than a rug. Just take a look at them:
