Antique Sultanabad Persian Allover Ivory Hand-Knotted Wool Rug – Circa 1920 BB7850 14'7" × 17'7" $130,000
$130,000
This antique Persian Sultanabad rug, woven circa 1920, reflects the celebrated village tradition of northwest Persia in a hand-knotted wool composition.
Its broad ivory field is softly worn to a mottled, almost watercolor effect, allowing the allover floral lattice to emerge in slate blue, teal, brick red, and brown. Rosettes, palmettes, and vinework repeat across the surface with relaxed symmetry, while the abrash gives the piece depth and movement.
A warm brown border frames the composition with large stylized blossoms and scrolling botanicals, reinforcing the rug’s architectural presence without making it feel formal. The result is a Sultanabad carpet that reads as collected and versatile, well suited to grounding a large room, softening contemporary interiors, or adding historic character to traditional spaces. Its distressed antique patina tempers the contrast and highlights the layered craftsmanship of the weave.
Part of Doris Leslie Blau's grand collection, this antique rug embodies the rich heritage and refined craftsmanship that define the world's most exceptional carpets.
