Antique Sultanabad Persian Floral Allover Warm Tan Hand-Knotted Wool Rug – Circa 1880 BB4331 11'2" × 18'4" $75,000
$75,000
This antique Persian Sultanabad rug, circa 1880, is hand-knotted in wool and woven in the celebrated Sultanabad tradition of northwestern Persia. Its scale and composition speak to the grand decorative rugs for which the region became known in the 19th century.
The field is rendered in a deep teal-slate blue and organized into a disciplined allover lattice of angular cartouche forms, each linked by crisp lines and small floral devices. Repeating rosette-like blossoms in warm tan, ivory, brick red, and soft gold punctuate the design, giving the composition a steady rhythm without overwhelming the eye. The result is architectural yet lively, with the geometry softened by floral detail.
A richly worked border frames the rug with palmettes, vines, and smaller blossoms in brick red, muted gold, and earthy accents, adding formality and depth to the composition. The balance of bold pattern and restrained color gives this antique Sultanabad Persian rug an easy versatility, suiting traditional rooms as well as layered transitional interiors where historic character and visual structure are equally valued.
