Shanghai was one of the five cities which opened to foreign trade after Great Britain won the First Opium War. This fact further influenced the city and caused its importance to grew considerably in the 19th century, which was also caused by its beneficial location as a port and great economic potential. Shanghai served as a center of commerce between China and other parts of the world and in the 1930’s became the primary financial hub of the Asia. The politics of new communist government in the 1940’s limited trade and caused Shanghai’s position to decline.
