An alumnus of the Fashion Institute of Technology, Matthew P. Smyth, started to make a name for himself after setting up his own company in 1988, specializing in interior design. Matthew Patrick Smyth Inc. takes great care to ensure comfort and detail of their interiors, which display tastes and needs of the company’s clients. In fact, the firm maintains close contact with many of them, who sometimes happen to be on for more than one project with Matthew P. Smyth.
Besides the USA, where it operates mainly in New York, Bedford, Long Island, Connecticut, Maine and Palm Beach, Matthew Patrick Smyth Inc. holds its corporate offices and residential projects in Paris and London.
What characterizes Smyth is his attention to detail. “I’ve never doubted that rules exist for a reason. In design, they are essential and must be taught”, he said, adding that “Right and wrong do exist in matters of planning, scale, proportion, the proper height relationship of chairs to tables”. Speaking about the rules of interior design, he named One Mirror Per Room as his favorite: “What I love about it is that it directs my thinking: it tells me to stop and weigh all the options from every angle before making a decision”. The designer’s caution is visible not only in his thinking but also in his work. Smyth mixes classic, well-known styles with amenity, in result creating ‘one of a kind’ interiors – beautiful and functional. This is why Smyth’s name is among the greatest designers on the list published by such famed magazines as House Beautiful, Traditional Home, New York Magazine, New York Spaces, Elements of Living, and Gotham Magazine.
Interiors are not Smyth’s only specialty. His marvelous carpets, designed for Doris Leslie Blau, are great examples of classic style with a modern twist. Moreover, his lines of fabrics and wall coverings introduced by F. Schumacher, as well as the commission of ‘Savoir Beds of London’ for beds, are proofs that Smyth’s talents are not limited solely to interior design.
Smyth participated in creating of numerous show-houses in Greenwich, Southampton, Nantucket, and Southport. His designs earned him many prestigious awards –2012 Alpha Workshop Award, 2011 Stars of Design Award, Elle Décor’s Top 25 A List among others.
