Mid-20th Century Handmade Moroccan Rug with Tribal Design BB6353 6'1" × 9'8" $18,000
$18,000
This classy, oriental vintage carpet is not only a beautiful utilitarian object but also a meaningful piece of history. It is packed with traditional kilim motifs that for centuries have served tribal women to express themselves and provide blessing to a household or a particular family. Here, the message is one of feminine power and guardianship.
The main field comprises of diamonds, the most commonly used symbol of protection against the Evil Eye(people’s jealousies and ill wishes) and Elinbelinde – “hands on hips” which represent female strength, motherhood and fertility. Elinbelinde is one of the oldest Anatolian motifs and a source of great interest to those that subscribe to the “Mother Goddess” theory regarding the origin of Anatolian kilims. Even more elaborate “Hands on Hips” pattern can be found on the main border, whereas secondary borders proudly bear “wolf’s mouth”, diamonds and a zigzag, that stands for running water, an extremely scarce resource in deserts and steppes where kilims were originally made.
All these powerful messages are further emphasized by a thoroughly composed color palette of sandy beige, brick red, off-white and indigo. Although quite rich and varied, the shades are properly toned and result in a harmonious composition. This vintage round rug was masterfully hand-knotted of the finest wool in accordance with old and refined weaving techniques which ensure its quality and uniqueness. It will be excellent for all modern interiors with a distinctive boho vibe but it will also find its way into classic and futuristic decors. An option for all lovers of never-passing charm and timeless elegance.
