$48,000
Turkish rugs from Oushak are considered one of the finest in the world and this imposing creation before your eyes may serve as an example of impeccable Oushak craftsmanship. Its design is not only beautiful but also profoundly meaningful as every element of the pattern carries a significance deeply rooted in the long tradition of rug weaving. The main field carries an expansive central medallion with a protective diamond symbol in the middle, and four staggered corner ornaments, each issuing a hook motif, also known as “cengel”. The hook, apart from being yet another symbol of protection, is a wish for a successful, unbreakable marriage. Four smaller, octagonal medallions are called “goz” and represent elephant footprints, particularly typical to Oushak genuine carpets. Tiny multiple crosses scattered around the central ornament are supposed to ward off the Evil Eye which in Islamic believes stands for jealousy and malicious intentions of other people. This rich variety of patterns is enclosed within a series of equally engaging borders proudly bearing botanical and geometric motifs intertwined with mesmerizing flower-heads of irises and roses. Crimson, the royal color, prevails in the background, whereas the design itself is rendered in the combination of slate gray, taupe, sandy beige, light gray and ivory. All hues work together without a flaw, creating a perfectly balanced and stately composition. This antique Turkish rug has survived until this day due to its masterful execution. It was thoroughly and tightly hand-knotted of the finest wool in accordance with old and refined weaving techniques by a skilled artisan. Such a qualitative and gracious carpet, permeated with historical charm, will be much more than a mere utilitarian object. It is an investment into never fading beauty and timeless elegance which in time will only increase in value.
