This antique North Indian rug dating back to 1920s features an elegant all-over design of dense botanical pattern of blooming trees, floral sprays, palmettes, exotic birds and vines, sketched in delicate inky blue with black and camel accents against a beige field. The composition is complemented by a border of palmettes and meandering flowering vines.

The production of antique Indian antique rugs and carpets dates from the Mughal period of the late 1520’s, beginning with the conquest of Northern India carpets by Babur. Akbar the Great (1556-1605) and his successors sponsored and encouraged the weaving of splendid Indian versions of classic Persian floral, garden and hunting indian oriental rugs and carpets. As an eminent patron of the arts, Jahangir (reigning from 1605-1628), possessed a deep love for the beauty of nature, influencing the artists of his court.
