Antique Persian Sultanabad Beige and Brown Handwoven Wool Rug BB5317 11'2" × 15'1" $80,000
$80,000
This turn of the century antique Sultanabad rug features an elaborate all-over design of floral abstractions and arabesques in beige and brown, surrounding an abstract center medallion in coral against a neutral field. The soft, muted patina of the early 20th century antique carpet gives it a delicate, watercolor-like impression. In the late 19th century the city of Sultanabad (now Arak in northwest Iran) was a center of high-quality rug production. With striking all-over patterns and more muted palettes than those of Persian counterparts, antique Persian rugs and carpets inspired an immediate following and created unabated demand for Oriental carpets from the Sultanabad district. In the present day, the style of this group of Persian antique carpet weavings is still regarded as the most appealing to European and American taste.
