Fine Antique Persian Khorassan Handmade Wool Rug BB6826 11'4" × 16'6" $85,000
$85,000
This circa-1920 antique Persian Khorassan rug features an intricate all-over design of floral abstractions, arabesques, palmettes and curving vinery in shades of blue, brown and beige against a field of abrashed yellow. The boteh and pomegranate, both staples of Oriental rug weaving, can be seen throughout the antique carpet.
The name “Khorassan,” given to the eastern province of Persia during the Sassanid Empire, means “where the sun arrives from.” Antique Khorassan Persian rugs and carpets are made with a soft wool woven into thin, tight piles, making them durable despite their soft lustrous wool. Further distinguishing themselves, Khorassan carpets make use of an unusual artistic effect produced by uneven trimming of the pile, which makes the figures of the design stand out from the background. Whatever the design or color, antique kilim rugs and carpetsmaintain a high standard of drawing and weaving technique.
