Caucasian Karabagh Beige and Brown Hand Knotted Wool Carpet BB7387 6'1" × 18'2" $30,000
$30,000
This late 19th-century antique Karabagh rug shows the power of traditional craft. Its abrashed burgundy-and-brown main field is dominated by overblown palmette-formed medallions containing floral motifs in shades of brown and beige within a leafy burgundy border. It’s customary for Bessarabian rugs to have light motifs presented against a dark background. This antique Karabagh rug was carefully hand-knotted of high-quality wool by a skilled artisan which ensured its longevity. If properly maintained, the rug will serve its owners for many years without any signs of wear.
Named after the region from which they originate, Karabagh rugs are a vital part of Azerbaijani culture, just like Persian carpets are for Iran. Antique oriental rugs from Karabagh were added to UNESCO’s list of Representative Masterpiece of Intangible Heritage in a gesture of appreciation.
