Vintage Bessarabian Hand Knotted Wool Rug BB7546 9'3" × 9'10" $20,000
European rugs from Bessarabia are easily recognizable thanks to floral and botanical patterns executed in a slightly folkloristic and whimsical manner, very often displaying shades of red, beige and green against a dark or simply black background. This antique Bessarabian rug, although kept in a traditional, nature-related aesthetics with rustic undertones, presents a rather light and unusual design.
The vintage Bessarabian rug, made circa 1920, has a taupe field with stars and an enlarged diamond framing a central roundel containing a centerpiece and geometric leaves within a beige border with connected cartouches containing geometric motifs. This design very much resembles the works of Scandinavian weavers rather than traditional Bessarabian rugs. The vintage Bessarabian rug’s body was carefully hand-knotted out of the finest wool which ensured its longevity. If maintained properly, this Bessarabian wonder will effortlessly withstand years of usage without any signs of wear, bringing in a note of romanticism and never-fading charm.
