The surrealist movement was founded in Paris by a small group of writers and artists who sought to channel the unconscious as a means to unlock the power of the imagination.
Surrealism has come to be seen as the most influential movement in 20th century art. Figures like Salvador Dali and Man Ray had an important influence on fashion. The meaning of Salvador is “destined to rescue and save paintings from the mediocre” and since the 1970’s it has attracted considerable attention from Art Historians.
Salvador loved fashion and was a great friend of the avant-garde designer Elsa Schiaparelli. The collaborations between Dali and Schiaparelli produced four iconic pieces one of which is the “Shoe Hat” which Salvador sketched in 1937 and was shown in Elsa’s collection of fall winter in 1938.
The surrealist’s would advocate the idea that ordinary and depicture expressions are vital and important. At Doris Leslie Blau we express our individuality, in our modern rug designs, not hampered by our imagination.
