Decoring with Spanish Rugs

Although not as popular as Persian or Oriental, European carpets have a long tradition which involved crossing of various cultures and nations. Among them, Spanish rugs get a lot of praise for their elegant designs and luxurious colors.

Vintage and antique Spanish carpets are usually made of natural fibers such as cotton, wool and silk. This makes their piles pleasantly soft, but also more prone to external factors such as light or moisture in comparison with synthetics. If you decide to acquire such a rug, make sure that you know how to properly take care of it, so it will serve you and your family for generations to come.

Spanish designs are classy and very traditional, not unlike French ones. However, due to Islamic influence in the past, they look more exotic and rich comparing to patterns found in other European countries. Classical interiors with an abundance of antiques are the best places for them, but there is nothing wrong with some experimenting. Traditional carpets tend to look great when contrasted with sharp edges and glass characteristic for ultramodern decor that dominates our flats. Whimsical bohemian apartments will become even more charming when adorned by an antique Spanish rug with a visible patina.

Traditional colors visible on Spanish carpets’ piles are blues, various shades of yellow and orange, a fiery mix which reflects country’s vivacious culture. They will undoubtedly look good in calm-colored rooms, although more colorful spaces can also benefit from their presence. If you are not sure if such palette will suit your interiors, it is a good idea to see if you have elements of decor in similar hues. This helps to create a connection between single pieces, resulting in harmonious compositions.
