History of Japan

The first written mentions of Japan can be found in Chinese historical texts from the 1st century. However, evidence points out that people lived there much earlier. As an island country, Japan had to rely on the fish and local vegetables to feed its people. Introduction of rice resulted in a rapid growth of Japan’s population. From the 12th century until 1868, Japan was ruled by successive feudal military shoguns who ruled in the name of the Emperor. In the early 17th century Japan entered into a long period of isolation, when only foreigners able to enter the country were Dutch merchants. However, this ended in 1853, when Japan was pressured by the United States’ fleet to open its borders to the West. At that time country was torn apart by internal conflicts and political wars, but the situation was stabilized in 1856, when the Imperial Court regained its power with the help of several clans, allowing it to establish the Empire of Japan. War victories in the World War I allowed the Empire to increase greatly its territory, but also lead to the sharp rise in nationalism and militarism in society. In World War II Japan joined the Axis Powers, wrecking havoc in Asia. Following the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, the country surrendered. It was followed by an economic boom in the 1950’s and 1960’s, allowing Japan to become the world’s technological capital it is today.

Culture

Japanese culture fascinates millions of people all over the world. Traditional arts are still cultivated and revered among Japan’s population – things like ikebana, origami or tea ceremony for some are a part of everyday life and considered to be a form of high art. The country is a home to nineteen UNESCO World Heritage sites, fifteen of which are of significant cultural significance. On the other hand, Japan’s fascination with technology is obvious – a simple stroll in the streets of Akihabara can take you to the next century! Japanese cuisine is considered among dietary experts to be one of the healthiest, as it is rich in fish, grains and fermented food, both of which have a positive impact on human body. Combined with active lifestyle and excellent healthcare, it helps Japanese citizens to lead long and satisfying lives.
