Antique Persian Khorassan Handmade Wool Rug BB5944 6'10" × 10'8" $15,000
$15,000
This circa-1920 antique Persian carpet features an all-over design of a garden vignette with exotic birds and bunches of grapes surrounding a flowering tree against a field of abrashed blue. Multiple borders in beige complete the ornate look of the antique carpet. The name “Khorassan,” given to the eastern province of Persia during the Sassanid Empire, means “where the sun arrives from.”
Antique Khorassan rugs and carpets are made with a soft wool woven into thin, tight piles, making them durable despite their soft lustrous wool. Further distinguishing themselves, Khorassan carpets make use of an unusual artistic effect produced by uneven trimming of the pile, which makes the figures of the design stand out from the background. Whatever the design or color, antique oriental rugs and carpets maintain a high standard of drawing and weaving technique.
