A handmade pile Rya rug by Jarvenpaa, circa 1928. It is in excellent original condition, consistent with age. This vintage rug immediately draws the eye with its warm, sunny color palette and unique Scandinavian design. Its main field displays an abstract design with folkloric motifs framed with a solid brown border. The rug is rendered in beige, orange, pink, light blue, and brown.

Its style – Rya – was developed many centuries ago in Scandinavia to protect the people, especially the mariners living off the sea, from the harsh weather conditions. The first Ryas were modeled on natural animal fur, characterized by an exceptionally shaggy, long pile.
