The city of Samarkand is well known for being the Islamic center for scholarly study where traditions of ancient crafts important for Islam, such as embroidery, gold embroidery, silk weaving, engraving on copper, ceramics, carving and painting on wood are carefully preserved. Samarkand rugs have been produced in this region since at least the seventeenth century.

This stunning antique Samarkand rug was hand woven in the mid 20th century, circa 1950. Richly decorated frames utilize an awe-inspiring geometric motif, which certainly enhances the whole composition.
