Samarkand (translated as “Stone Fort”) is a weaving center that issued some of the most iconic and sought-after rug designs in the world. Samarkand rugs are flowers born in the arid landscape of Central Asia that can become statement pieces in your décor.
The vintage rug before your eyes, made circa 1948, is a classic example of Samarkand craft. Its main field is occupied by two large medallions surrounded by cloud bands and rosettes. The striped border embraces the main field. Everything is rendered in a muted color palette featuring mauve, beige, green, orange and black. The colors obtained from natural dyes are abrashed.
The vintage rug can boast of refined workmanship – it was carefully hand-knotted of high-quality wool in accordance with centuries-old techniques. Provided a minimal amount of care, it will serve its owners for generations without any signs of wear.
