The ancient city of Samarkand is located at the former Silk Road which had a strong impact on rug designs coming from the Central Asian town. This lively vintage rug, permeated with Far-Asian influences, shows the incredible richness and diversity of Samarkand creations.
The main field incorporates a decorative central medallion surrounded by kilim motifs and enveloped by four corner spandrels. This tastefully balanced composition is enclosed within a series of elegant borders with further Chinese-derived motifs. The prevailing light gray with bluish undertones is complemented by dark brown, dusty yellow, mauve and beige. The entire design is bold yet not overwhelming.
