Swedish Tapestry Weave by Marta Mass Fjetterstrom (Hogdjuren) BB6339 4'4" × 7'4" $12,000
$12,000
Märta Måås-Fjetterström is best known for her collection of exquisite carpets and rugs, which took the world of interior design by storm. However, not many people are aware that her tapestries are no less beautiful and valuable. Titled Högdjuren (Royals), this astonishing piece shows abstract tendencies seen in some of Måås-Fjetterström’s patterns. The designer decided to take a new approach on traditional craft, referencing the art of the ferocious Vikings. Simplistic forms paired with natural colors, such as beige, blue and brown, give the whole composition a rugged charm, characteristic for ancient works of early Scandinavian peoples. Woven before 1942, the tapestry has a slight patina, as expected of a vintage carpet. This piece can be considered a very brave artistic statement by 1940’s standard and a revolutionary step for the weavers worldwide.
