$120,000
This early 20th-century Persian Bakhtiari rug, exemplifies the artistry of the Bakhtiari tribe from west-central Iran. Its pale celadon field features a spacious garden design adorned with cypresses, weeping willows, and flowering branches, all framed by a camel-colored border embellished with flowering branches and rosettes.
Bakhtiari rugs are renowned for their intricate patterns and exceptional craftsmanship. While originally woven by nomadic peoples, the most authentic Bakhtiari rugs are produced by settled communities in regions such as Chahar Mahal and Bakhtiari, southwest of Isfahan. These rugs typically have a cotton foundation with a woolen weft sourced from the tribe’s own flocks, resulting in variations in gloss and texture. The wool’s luster can range from dull to highly glossy, and the pile is usually trimmed to a medium or high length, providing a plush feel underfoot. The finest Bakhtiari rugs, distinguished by their high knot density, are known as ‘Bibibaff’.
The garden design, or ‘Khesti’ motif, is a hallmark of Bakhtiari rugs. This pattern divides the rug into compartments, each depicting elements like trees, flowers, or animals, symbolizing the Persian garden’s paradise. The use of natural dyes imparts a rich, harmonious color palette, with shades of orange, blue, yellow, brown, taupe and white being prominent. The meticulous weaving process, often taking years to complete, reflects the weavers’ dedication and skill.
This particular rug’s expansive size and intricate design make it a rare and valuable piece, suitable for collectors and connoisseurs seeking to add a touch of Persian heritage and timeless beauty to their spaces.
