Vintage Indian Rug BB5733 18'0" × 20'7" $120,000
$120,000
This modern mid-century vintage Indian rug features an all-over trellis design of curvilinear feathery leaves and angular tendrils in dark brown against a camel field. The repeating geometrics, in places reminiscent of the herati pattern, combine tradition with the influence of modern minimalism. In India, rug and antique carpet production dates from the Mughal period of the late 1520s. Beginning with the conquest of Northern India by Babur, weaving workshops developed around the imperial cities of Agra, Fathpur and Lahore. Akbar the Great and his successors sponsored and encouraged the weaving of splendid Indian versions of classic Persian floral, garden and hunting large colorful area rugs and carpets. With a knotted pile of the softest pashmina wool, indian oriental rugs typically originated with weaving families. Borrowing from this rich tradition, this vintage north Indian rug reinterprets classical designs for a more modern feel.
