Antique Persian Sultanabad Botanic Handmade Wool Rug BB5671 11'0" × 19'0" $22,000
$22,000
This circa-1920 antique Persian rug features an intricate all-over design of stylized floral motifs, arabesques and vinery in shades of tan, beige and gray against a field of black. A thick main border in beige containing floral imagery accentuates the dark, striking main design of the sultanabad area rug. In the late 19th century the city of Sultanabad (now Arak in northwest Iran) was a center of high-quality rug production. With striking all-over patterns and more muted palettes than those of Persian counterparts, antique Persian Sultanabad rugs and carpets inspired an immediate following and created unabated demand for antique oriental rugs from the Sultanabad district. In the present day, the style of this group of Persian antique rug weavings is still regarded as the most appealing to European and American taste.
