Out of all carpets from the Caucasus, those from Shirvan are distinguished by a remarkable depth of colors, complexity of composition and phenomenal patterns.
The main field of this antique Shirvan rug is adorned with a grid of geometricized paisleys (also known as boteh or buta) each of which carries a flower motif within. The main field is embraced by a series of borders with further paisleys and flower head motifs. This design is executed in a color palette featuring blue, brown, gold, pink and red.
The rug was masterly hand-knotted of high-quality wool in accordance with traditional weaving techniques by a skilled artisan. Due to such thorough making, this antique carpet made circa 1900 has survived till the 21th century without any signs of wear and will surely serve its owners for generations, provided a minimal amount of maintenance.
