If we were to compare antique Indian rugs to certain animal, it would definitely be peacock. Luscious colors and rich patterns make those rugs immediately stand out even when juxtaposed with other types of carpets, such as luxurious Persian rugs. The production of antique north Indian rugs and carpets in any quantity dates back to the Mughal period of the late 1520’s. Beginning with the conquest of Northern India by Babur, weaving workshops developed around the imperial cities of Agra, Fathpur and Lahore.
This finely woven Indian Rug was undoubtedly inspired by the motifs found in Persian rugs from the famed city of Tabriz. Made by hand in the early 20th century, circa 1920, it certainly draws the attention thanks to its elegant design. On the main field we can see abstract geometric floral shapes, which are interconnected by a graphic vine design within an intricate border. The color palette accompanying this composition is filled with cool tones of blue and violet, with just a bit of caramel beige to warm it up a little bit.
