Nowadays we can enjoy the beauty of antique rugs in the comfort of our own homes, but it was not always the case. The city of Agra had a profound influence on the production of antique Indian rugs. During the sixteenth century the city of Agra, famed for the Taj Mahal, was the capital of the Mughal Empire and the cultural center of Indian art forms such as jewelry, miniature paintings, architecture and Indian rug weaving. For some time Agra rugs were forgotten, but in the 19th interest in traditional Indian rugs resurfaced, resulting in a new pieces being produced.
This astonishing antique Indian rug was hand woven in the late 19th century, circa 1880. What immediately draws attention to it is undoubtedly its size. Measured to be 17’7″ × 18’1″ (536 × 551 cm), this antique rug will perfectly fit a spacious household or large business venue. Its design includes the main field covered with an allover dense pattern of palmettes and floral motifs. The whole is bordered by an abrashed cartouche frame . Rug’s color palette deserves a separate mention due to how well composed it is. A mix of warm browns, ranging from almost beige to cocoa, helps to highlight all the best features of the pattern.
