Fine 18th Century Tapestry Rug BB5773 13'6" × 18'6" $250,000
$250,000
This circa-1750 antique Tapestry European carpet features ornate repeating vase patterns with palmettes, bouquets of flowers and various arabesques in an all-over design, in colors of deep blue, green, reds and pinks against a field of beige. Floral motifs and birds appear in the dark red border for an elaborate, intriguing look. Tapestry is weft-faced weaving, in which all the warp threads are hidden in the completed work. In tapestry weaving, the artisan typically interlaces each colored weft yarn back and forth in its own small pattern area. The weft threads are usually wool or cotton, but may include silk, gold, silver or other alternatives. The Tapestry has a rich historic tradition, from the fine wool tapestries of Arras, France in the 15th century to William Morris’ resurrection of tapestry-making in the medieval style in the 19th century. The tradition endures today in both restoration of the antique and creation of modern art.
