A large hand-knotted wool rug from the early 20th century, in excellent condition. This is a rare Gavin Morton piece with a plush pile and quintessential Art & Crafts design. The composition is symmetrical, with a pattern of undulating lattice in light, olive green and yellow, on a vast salmon pink field. A little more colorful border abundant in floral elements frames the composition.
British artist Gavin Morton (1867–1954) is perhaps best known for his work as head of the design department for Morton & Co, a Scotland based textile company founded by his uncle Alexander Morton. Over time, Morton & Co aligned itself with the rising Arts and Crafts movement in Great Britain.
