Swedish Rya Rug

A handmade Swedish Rya wool rug with a cozy pile from the mid 20th century. It is in excellent original condition, consistent with age. This vintage Swedish rug immediately draws the eye with its beautiful colors and unique design. It displays an abstract design enclosed with a solid light blue border in well-balanced and contrasting hues of blue, navy, pink, red, yellow, beige and black.

Its style – Rya – was developed many centuries ago in Scandinavia to protect the people, especially the mariners living off the sea, from the harsh weather conditions. The first Ryas were modeled on natural animal fur, hence they are characterized by an exceptionally shaggy, long pile.
