Vintage Samarkand Rug BB7008

Price: $14,000

The city of Samarkand is well known for being the Islamic centre for scholarly study where traditions of ancient crafts important for Islam, such as embroidery, gold embroidery, silk weaving, engraving on copper, ceramics, carving and painting on wood are carefully preserved. Samarkand rugs have been produced in this region since at least the seventeenth century.

This stunning antique Samarkand rug was hand woven in the mid 20th century, circa 1950. The perfect balance between colors and design makes it the best example of what vintage Oriental rugs can achieve. Central field contains an all-over  design of flowers and climbing vines. Richly decorated frames utilize an awe-inspiring geometric motif, which certainly enhances the whole composition. Color palette of this vintage rug not only helps to give the pattern more depth, but also shows how skilled weavers were in the past. Elegant mix of blue and delicate brown is further improved with an addition of neutral beige, which brings out the best in both those hues.

Doris Leslie Blau’s grand collection of high quality contemporary rugs and antique carpets is everything one could ever wish for.
