A second-quarter 20th century Samarkand kilim rug, the tan field with a nearly invisible pomegranate vinery trellis within a series of guard borders with geometric motifs, stripes and hooked devices.

These unusual antique Samarkand carpets of Central Asia display themes from many oriental cultures including, China with fretwork borders and lotus blossoms India with cloud bands, Turkey with pomegranates and carnations, and Persia with a delicate floral trellis work. Perhaps the most evocative of all the East Turkestan motifs is the pomegranate, signifying prosperity. Woven at the crossroads of many civilizations, it is fitting that these antique oriental rugs and vintage carpets from Samarkand employ such rich and varied symbolism.
