Scandinavian Geometric Wool Flat-Weave by Märta Måås-Fjetterström BB6356 9'5" × 11'10" $9,000
Marta Maas-Fjetterstrom, the doyenne of Swedish weaving, is the author of this remarkable flat-weave. Made circa 1945, this iconic carpet is a classic example of the Northern craftsmanship. The quality of its execution is visible at first glance as this over 70-year-old rug is not in the slightest ravaged by time. However, the greatest strength of this vintage hand-made wonder lies in its traditional Scandinavian design. Simple, geometric and not exceedingly dense pattern of the main field comprises of crosses and rhombuses which reflect the beauty of the natural surroundings of Sweden. The rug is trimmed at both ends with the rainbow-colored consecutive arrows giving the impression of constant movement. Although rich, the color palette is absolutely not overwhelming – every tint is properly toned and the neutral background balances the array of colors. The combination of taupe, mustard, brown, dusty pink, blue and green is presented on the light grayish setting. The whole composition reflects the taste and sublimity of the Scandinavian weaving art. The piece is originally signed at the bottom by Marta Maas-Fjetterstrom’s workshop. This vintage Swedish flat-weave is a real treat for true rug connoisseurs.
