One-of-a-Kind Vintage Chinese Abstract Handmade Wool Rug BB7104 4'10" × 9'4" $6,000
This circa-1920 antique Chinese rug features a border of traditional oriental designs in blue, white and dark rust colors against a field of muted brown. Influenced by Eastern religions, the vintage carpet includes designs such as the “endless knot,” a Buddhist emblem symbolizing long duration and the swastika, here most likely a Buddhist graphical representation of eternity. There is evidence that decorative antique oriental rugs and carpets have been a significant art form within the Chinese culture for many centuries, if not for several millennia. Mostly in blues and beiges, with classical symbols of longevity, elaborate lotus blossoms, chrysanthemums and cloud-band motifs, these antique Chinese carpets and beautiful rugs are frequently visible in paintings from as early as the Tang Dynasty. For the most part, designs of antique Chinese deco rugs are as indigenous as those of antique Chinese porcelains and silk textiles, featuring the repeating simple design devices of swastikas and fretwork.
