Vintage Swedish Rya Rug Attributed to Josef Frank BB6413 4'10" × 8'4" $8,000

Josef Frank, a multi-talented artist who until this day remains an icon of textile design, is the author of this exceptional vintage Rya rug. Being forced to move from Austria to Sweden in order to avoid the threat of Nazism, Frank settled there with his Swedish wife and soon absorbed the ideals of Scandinavian aesthetics. This mesmerizing creation is a work of Modernist art as well as an excellent example of Josef Frank’s original style. The rug’s form is strictly Swedish – Ryas are probably the earliest type of Scandinavian weaving. Its pile, masterfully hand-knotted of the finest wool in accordance with traditional techniques, is shaggy and soft, providing sheer pleasure not only for eyes but also hands and feet. On the other hand, the design contains elements characteristic to the northern craft like rich palette of toned colors, including rosewood, carmine, forest green, dusty blue and yellow and ivory, but it also carries Frank’s personal imprint. The borderless field bears an allover nature-related pattern exuding effortless elegance and charming, a bit whimsical appeal. Rounded shapes and smooth lines captivate with simplicity yet are far from puerile. This one-of-a-kind Swedish Rya rug may enrich your home décor by adding a touch of color and timeless chic crafted by one of the greatest designers of all times.
