Authentic 19th Century Samarkand Red and Blue Handmade Wool Rug BB6057 8'0" × 15'9" $35,000
$35,000
This circa-1880 vintage silk Samarkand kilim rug features large diamond and circular medallion shapes in hues of red, containing and surrounded by floral and geometric abstractions against a field of electric blue. Corner brackets and elaborately-patterned multicolored borders complete the intriguing look of the late 19th century vintage carpet. The Buddhist symbol of the endless knot – symbolizing long duration – appears throughout the design.
The vintage Oriental carpets from Kashgar, Yarkand and Khotan in the Chinese-occupied Autonomous Region of Sikiang are collectively known as Samarkands. Vintage rugs from this region are typically rendered in a glossy wool, occasionally embellished with richly brocaded silk and metal-thread. Unlike Persian antique rugs nyc with their reds and blues, Samarkand carpets have soft colors with startling additions: magenta with acid green, peachy beige with brown, saffron yellow with lacquer red, bone with brown or slate blue.
