This Deco design-inspired contemporary Tibetan rug is hand-knotted in wool and silk and features an all-over design of curving abstractions in sharp red against a field of neutral gray, completed by a geometric border in gold and blue that is reminiscent of classic European ornate designs, yet simultaneously simple and stark – in keeping with the streamlined style of Deco rugs that inspired this piece. The contemporary carpet has a muted patina and faded overall effect that is juxtaposed with the open space and minimalist modernity of its Deco-inspired feel. Tibetan and Nepalese rug making is an ancient, culturally specific craft that can be traced back to roughly the 17th century.
