History of Switzerland

The country was formed in the 1291, when local nobles decided to go against the Austrian Habsburgs, who ruled those lands. Their action resulted in creating a basis for future Switzerland. In 1315 the Swiss army defeated Prince Leopold Hapsburg, which inspired other nobles to join the war. Then in 1332 the canton of Luzern joined. The canton of Zurich followed in 1351. The Swiss defeated the Hapsburgs again at Sempach in 1386 and Nafels in 1388. Because Switzerland lacked natural resources that other countries were rich in, the country decided to borrow its formidable soldiers to those, who could pay. This resulted in Pope Julius II forming the Swiss Guard, which serves as Pope’s bodyguards to this day. However, after a few painful defeats at the hands of the French, the Swiss adopted they famous policy of total neutrality. In the 16th century like the rest of Europe Switzerland was rocked by the Reformation. Soon urban parts of Switzerland embraced Protestantism under the lead of Ulrich Zwingli and Jean Calvin, although rural areas remained Catholic. For the next few centuries Switzerland flourished culturally and financially, remaining largely undisturbed by other countries of Europe, except for France. In the late 19th century Switzerland became known for its chemical industry and its precision engineering. Although the country officially remained neutral during World War I, some of its troops supported both sides of the conflict. Swiss neutrality was questioned by many after World War II, as its banks were known to accepted gold looted by the Nazis and Swiss industry actually helped to supply the German war machine.

Culture

Switzerland is composed of a number of cantons, each of which has its different traditions, customs and sometimes even language! The country has three major languages, which reflect its cultural diversity: French, German and Romansh, although in some cantons Italian is also spoken. Zürich and Geneva have each been ranked among the top cities in the world in terms of quality of life, thanks to their modernized layout and clean environment. Swiss mountains are considered to be an excellent spot for skiing, hiking and mountain biking and are eagerly visited during all seasons. Despite modern Swiss lifestyle, traditional farmer and herder culture also predominates in many areas of the country. Folk art is kept alive and is expressed throughout music, dance, poetry, wood carving and embroidery.
