History of Sweden

Sweden emerged as an independent country between 12th and 13th century. After epidemic of Black Death in the 14th century killed off a third of country’s population, Sweden was significantly weakened, which made it susceptible to political attacks of Hanseatic League, a confederation of merchant guilds from Germany, which aimed to get the whole of Scandinavia under its influence. Fearing for its culture, finances and language, Sweden and other countries of the region decided to group together and form the Scandinavian Kalmar Union, although as the Union meet with other problems, Sweden decided to leave it in the 16th century. The Thirty Years War, a religious conflict in Central Europe, which began in 1618, gave Sweden a unique opportunity to expand its territories. Unfortunately, those territories were gradually lost in numerous conflicts that Sweden was entangled in, ending in the annexation of Finland by Russia in 1809. Ever since 1814, when Norway was forced into a personal union with Sweden, the country managed to maintain a position of neutrality in foreign affairs, even during World War I and II. Still, Sweden sometimes breached its policy of neutrality, with the most famous one being taking in refugees from German-occupied Europe.

Culture

Picturesque fiords and varied terrain make Sweden a great spot for those interested in hiking or Nordic walking. Every year thousands of people visit the country in hopes of seeing one of its many wonders – northern lights. In recent years Sweden became known as European capital of thriller, due to a sudden surge of excellent crime fiction authors, such as Stieg Larsson or Camilla Läckberg.

Swedish architecture is extremely varied, ranging from the Romanesque churches in the country side to ultramodern structures elevated in the cities. Among older structures worth seeing are Borgholm Castle, Halltorps Manor and Eketorp fortress on the island Öland, the Nyköping fortress and the Visby city wall.

Sweden is a home of numerous great artists, such as the 19th century painter Carl Larsson , who helped to shaped the image of the idyllic Swedish countryside with his illustrations. One of the country’s greatest treasures is its traditional handcraft. Weaving was always an important part of Swedish culture, but in the mid 19th century, the government started to fund arts programs, in order to preserve traditional patterns, endangered by the influences of immensely popular Art Deco and Art Nouveau movements. Thanks to such initiatives, numerous ingenious weavers emerged, heralding a new era in Swedish design, with Måås-Fjetterström being the most prominent example. Thanks to her work, Scandinavian rugs gained worldwide recognition and are still highly sought after.
