History of San Marino

Country’s name allegedly comes from a stonemason named Marinus, who originated from present-day Croatia. After being persecuted for his Christian sermons, Marinus went on and established an independent monastic community on Monte Titano, creating the foundation of modern San Marino. Country’s independence was recognized in 1631 by the Papacy, officially putting it on the map of Europe. However, San Marino’s independence was challenged over a century later by Napoleon’s army. Thanks to the wit of its Regent, Antonio Onofri, the state was saved and gained respect of the French leader. During the process of Italian unification in the 19th century San Marino sheltered many of those who feared repercussions for their support and was later rewarded by keeping its independence when Italy was unified. However the relationship between two countries turned sour when during World War I San Marino remained neutral, as opposed to Italy, who declared war on Austria-Hungary. San Marino sustained its neutrality in 1940, when World War II began, however this time it was respected by its neighbor. San Marino became a member of the Council of Europe in 1988 and of the United Nations in 1992.

Culture

Tourism plays a great role in San Marino’s revenue. Only last year this small country was visited by 1.940.178 people! No wonder why – San Marino is rich in both natural and architectural beauty. One of its main attractions are the Three Towers of San Marino, located on the peaks of Monte Titano in the capital city. The site of Mount Titano became part of the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2008.They importance is so big that those towers are depicted on the Flag of San Marino and its coat of arms. The Towers were also an inspiration of country’s national dish Cake of the Three Towers”, a wafer layered cake covered in chocolate. Other attractions of San Marino include three fortresses, Guaita, Cesta, and Montale, which decorate the ridge of Mount Titano, Palazzo Pubblico, Piazza della Liberta, Museo di Stato, containing Egyptian antiquities, Byzantine icons, 17th-century paintings, and antique San Marino coins and Basilica di San Marino, Neo-classical basilica was built in the early 19th century on the foundations of a fourth-century Romanesque church. Those interested in motorization can also pay a visit to San Marino’s Rosso Ferrari Museum, where you will find some of the most stunning vintage cars made by Ferrari. Besides Formula 1 cars, and vehicles which belonged to famous people, such as the first Ferrari Spyder designed by Pininfarina and owned by Marilyn Monroe, museum has also unpublished photos and mementos from the historical races where Formula 1 cars took part.
