History of Italy
Italy as a country emerged after the fall of Roman Empire. However at that time it was nothing more than a group of rivaling city-states. Many of them rose to greatness through shipping, trade and banking. Those kingdoms acted as main trade hub with Asia and the Near East, which allowed them to incorporate things like noodles or spices into their everyday life. Italian city-states remained largely independent from each other, however, a substantial part of the Peninsula’s center remained under control of the Papal States. Following its liberation, Italy abolished the monarchy, reinstated democracy and enjoyed a prolonged economic boom years after that.
