The Art of German Design

German design of the mid-20th century is very conservative, without unnecessary decorations, simple but thoughtful, with the color palette relying on subdued hues. Thanks to these factors it finds itself extremely well in 21st century living spaces. In 1919 Walter Gropius started the school of Bauhaus. The German term Bauhaus—literally “construction house”—was understood as “School of Building”, but in spite of its name and the fact that its founder was an architect, the Bauhaus did not have an architecture department during its first years of existence. Nonetheless, it was founded with the idea of creating a “total” work of art, also known as “Gesamtkunstwerk”, in which all arts, including architecture, would eventually be brought together. The Bauhaus style later became one of the most influential currents in modern design. The idea of bringing all arts together, so prevalent during the first half of the 20th century, is common to many modernistic movements, including Arts & Crafts and Scandinavian design, and finds its reflection in rug weaving. Vintage and antique rugs from the mid-twenties are distinguished by simpler, more geometric patterns compared to opulent, curvilinear oriental carpets from the previous centuries. German Bauhaus rugs strongly rely on angular elegance and toned colors which are executed in the upmost quality. They are the essence of German design.
