Nader Bolour

Doris Leslie Blau Gallery’s owner, Nader Bolour, is widely known as a talented businessman. Apart from being an exquisite dealer of rugs, Nader Bolour is a designer himself, which can be easily seen in gallery’s broad range of custom carpets, made from best materials available for its demanding clientele. His family established the Bolour&Sons enterprise in the 1920’s in Iran and quickly gained recognition as one of the most distinguished rug dealers worldwide. After Bolours moved their business to London, Nader Bolour had his first meeting with Doris Leslie Blau, a great connoisseur of antique Oriental rugs. Few years later, when the two of them met again, they formed a partnership. Nader purchased Doris Leslie Blau Gallery in 1997.

History of Australia

Human habitation of the Australian continent is estimated to have begun around 65,000 to 70,000 years ago, with the first inhabitants possibly being ancestors of the modern Indigenous Australians. Local population concentrated on hunting-gathering, had complex economy and oral culture with spiritual values based on reverence for the land. However, 1 January 1901 marks the beginning of Australia as an independent country. It was then when after a decade of planning federation of the colonies was created and the Commonwealth of Australia established. The Australian Capital Territory was formed in 1911 in the location of the present-day capital city – Canberra. In 1914, Australia joined Britain and other countries of the Entente in fighting World War I and took in many of the major battles fought on the Western Front. Country’s involvement in World War I is treaded by some Australians as a true beginning of their country, especially the defeat of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps at Gallipoli. Next great war and subsequent threat of the Japanese invasion caused Australia to become ally with the United States, which at that time became active in the war.

Culture

Although at first the culture of Australia was primarily influenced by England, with time it started to mix with indigenous cultures of the region and neighboring islands. Australian immigration policy in the 1970’s encouraged the influx of Asian population, which continues to have a significant impact on the country’s cultural identity. Indigenous Australian rock art is the oldest and richest in the world and spread across numerous sites. In the colonial days, artists became fascinated with Australia’s “wildness” and unfamiliarity. The first typically Australian movement in art appeared in the 19th century with the impressionistic works of Arthur Streeton and Tom Roberts, commonly associated with Heidelberg School. Australia has one of the world’s highest attendances of art galleries and museums per person and its galleries have an impressive collection of both international and local art. Country’s government funds many of Australia’s performing arts companies and each state has its own symphony orchestra. Since the aftermath of World War II, American popular culture has influenced Australia through television and cinema, although nowadays Australians pay more attention to their local influences than those of foreign origins. Curiously enough, although Australia has its official national anthem, it has also multiple unofficial ones. Banjo Paterson’s “Waltzing Matilda” written in 1895 is regarded as such, due its perfect capture of the Australian spirit and culture. Miles Franklin is the namesake of Australia’s most prestigious literary prize and its first recipient, Patrick White, went on to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1973
