Turkey is known in the world as one of the greatest Oriental rug producers. Not only does it have an abundance of high quality materials that are traditionally used in weaving, but also, thanks to the various foreign influences, local weavers developed very original patterns which combine tradition with exotic. Antique Turkish rugs are highly sought after by art collectors and museums due to both their beauty and historical value. Oushak rugs are traditionally classified as Anatolian, meaning that they come from Anatolia in Turkey. The earlier types of Turkish Oushak carpets, are often called “Lotto carpets” and “Holbein carpets”, as they appeared in the paintings by Lorenzo Lotto and Hans Holbein the Younger.
This stunning antique Turkish rug was hand woven in the early 20th century, circa 1920. Great attention put into even the smallest of details in its design is a proof that is was created by a true master of their craft. The central field of the rug depicts several palmettes with delicate floral designs within, which surround a small central medallion. The whole is framed by an elegant floral border very similar to what we can see in some European rugs.
