Vintage Spanish flat weave Rug BB5412 4'10" × 10'6" $22,000

$22,000

This antique circa-1850 Spanish flat-weave rug features a large center medallion in beige with sea green circular patterns, ringed by deep blue. Beige floral abstractions stand out against a field of dark blue and a main beige border adds cohesion to this antique piece. Flat-woven rugs feature a type of weave created from vertical (weft) and horizontal (warp) interlocked threads, for a napless overall effect. Spanish cut-pile rugs from the 15th – 17th centuries were woven with knots tied to single warps. After the Christian conquest of Spain, two main types of rugs were produced – those that combined folk motifs with Christian and Islamic designs and those that were based upon Turkish motifs. In the 18th and 19th centuries, carpets, woven with the Turkish knot, were produced with designs based on those from Savonnerie and Aubusson factories in France.
